GOP Senate Candidate John Sanchez Pledges to End Medicare, Heather Wilson Still in Hiding

According to the Wall Street Journal, grand GOP poohbah and special interest mega-lobbyist Grover Norquist is putting the screws on Senate candidates like Heather Wilson, publicly pressuring them to endorse the extreme GOP plan that ends Medicare for seniors in order to give tax breaks to billionaires and special interests. Wilson is an enthusiastic supporter of Norquist’s special interest orthodoxy and even signed his pledge to preserve tax breaks for his special interest clients. But now Wilson is refusing to say whether she will follow Norquist’s latest marching orders and vote for the extreme GOP plan to end Medicare.

“Heather Wilson’s guiding light, mega-lobbyist and Republican fixer Grover Norquist, has a message for her– sign onto the Republican plan to end Medicare or else,” said Matt Canter, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. “Heather Wilson has a long history of kowtowing to Norquist’s demands, but she refuses to say whether she will follow his latest marching orders. As Republican special interests continue to push for the radical plan to privatize Medicare, Heather Wilson is failing to stand up to the extreme right wing and her special interest cronies and put seniors and middle-class families first.”

In the past, Wilson has been eager to sign her name to Norquist’s extreme pledges. She enthusiastically signed Norquist’s tax pledge in order to impress special interest donors, D.C. lobbyists and Norquist’s far right minions.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Norquist is demanding that Republicans in Congress enact the extreme Republican plan to end Medicare or pay the consequences.  “Anti-tax activist Grover Norquist, the keeper of the no-new-taxes pledge that virtually all Republican politicians have signed, has a new set of marching orders for the GOP troops; Enact Rep. Paul Ryan‘s budget plan.” [Wall Street Journal, 7/12/11]

It’s been more than four months since the Republican Medicare plan was introduced, but Heather Wilson has time and again refused to say whether she supports it.  Will Wilson follow Norquist per usual?

Wilson Continued to Sidestep Ryan Budget Questions. In an interview with Politico, Wilson continued to sidestep questions about House Finance Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s 2012 budget plan that would end Medicare in its current form. Wilson praised Ryan “for his efforts” but also pointed out that she disagreed with portions of his blueprint. “I’m not in the House of Representatives. This is not something that I have to vote on. I don’t agree with some of the things in his budget plan. There are a lot of things in there that cause some concern,” Wilson said. [Politico, 7/8/11]
