DPNM, Senator Udall, Senator Heinrich and Representative Ben Ray Luján Congratulate New Mexican Raul Alvillar as New DNC Political Director

Yesterday, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced that native New Mexican and political operative, Raul Alvillar will be the next Political Director at the DNC.

DPNM Chairman Sam Bregman said, “Raul worked extensively in New Mexico politics, we know firsthand that he has great determination and political skill that will make him incredibly valuable to the Democratic Party. I am very excited that Raul will be joining the DNC team and I look forward to working with him in his new capacity.”

Alvillar, who was born in Albuquerque, NM worked for DPNM, Senator Tom Udall and Richard Romero’s Congressional campaign prior to working in the White House and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“Congratulations to Raul and the DNC, this is a great appointment for both,” Senator Tom Udall said. “I’m so pleased to see a smart, talented young man from Albuquerque move into this position. I was fortunate to have Raul work for me and I know his deep understanding of the priorities of New Mexico will serve us well. His broader experience in national politics will help him and the DNC elect people across the country who will stand up for middle class families.”‎

“Raul is a perfect choice to take over this critical position. He is a first rate political mind and has been a fantastic public servant. There are countless folks all across New Mexico who are very proud of their native son,” said Senator Martin Heinrich.

“I’m pleased that Raul is coming on board at the DNC,” said Representative Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico. “His long record of success and depth of experience in both politics and government, from New Mexico to D.C., will serve him well in this central role and make him a key asset for the DNC.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz Statement on the Rejection of Mississippi’s “Personhood” Amendment

Following Tuesday’s vote in Mississippi on Amendment 26, the so-called “Personhood” Amendment, Democratic National Chair Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“Tonight’s vote was an important victory for the health of women and their families in Mississippi and across the country. The so-called ‘Personhood’ Amendment that Mississippi voters voted down tonight was a dangerous and divisive measure that would restrict a woman’s right to choose even in cases of rape, incest and life of the mother. It would highly restrict or even end most infertility treatments, and it would go as far as outlawing many forms of birth control. This amendment is so extreme that even pro-life Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour said it gave him pause.

“But it apparently wasn’t too extreme for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who recently declared his support for efforts to pass ‘personhood’ amendments in Mississippi and elsewhere. These proposals pose a serious risk to women and their health and Mitt Romney should be ashamed of himself for supporting them, and the American people should take note. As advocates for women’s health breathe a sigh of relief tonight, we must also remember that the fight is far from over. Republicans are working around the clock to get similar ‘personhood’ amendments on the ballot in states across the country—and we need to redouble our efforts to stop them from moving our nation backward.”

Democratic National Committee Blasts Mitt Romney on Foreclosure Crisis Comments

After Mitt Romney said that we should let the foreclosure crisis “run its course and hit the bottom,” DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:

“Mitt Romney’s comment to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that we shouldn’t try and stop the foreclosure crisis but should let it ‘run its course and hit the bottom’ is appalling and wrong. Romney demonstrated yet again just how out of touch he is with Nevadans—a statement so extreme that even right-wing Republican Nevada U.S. Senator Dean Heller was forced to condemn it.

“While Romney’s comments are appalling, it’s not unexpected from someone who made a fortune firing workers and sending jobs overseas. It should come as no surprise that he wants to let Wall Street write its own rules and thinks that corporations are people. Romney’s not advocating for any policies that would get Americans back to work; he supports doubling down on the failed policies of the past that caused the economy downturn.”

New Spanish Language Ad Underscores President Obama’s Committment to Hispanics

Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has announced that the DNC has released a new Spanish-language ad, underscoring the President’s commitment to the Hispanic community and setting the record straight. The President’s record is clear. Under his leadership, we’ve expanded the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to an additional 4 million children, including, for the first time ever, legal immigrant children. The President enacted student loan reform, which provides an additional 150,000 Pell Grants to Hispanic students. And he signed into law the Recovery Act, which kept 1.9 million Latinos out of poverty in 2009. President Obama has always been and will always be committed to the Hispanic Community and fighting for their priorities.

The DNC ad will run in New Mexico, Florida, Nevada, and Washington, D.C.

With the release of the ad, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“The special interest-funded Crossroads is trying to hide the fact that the Republican Party would end Medicare as we know it to pay for tax cuts for the very rich. They are trying to hide the fact that Republicans are supporting a budget plan that would roll back our economic progress and place additional burdens on seniors and the middle class. But the Administration’s record is clear. President Obama has been focused from day one on strengthening economic security for working and middle class families. That’s why he extended health insurance to millions of children, expanded financial aid for our youth and cut taxes for the middle class.

“The Republican Party is offering no new solutions to the American people- they simply want to double down on the failed policies that brought our economy to the brink of a depression and hurt millions of American families, including far too many Latinos. The American people don’t want more of the failed policies of the Republican Party. What the country needs is the continued leadership of President Obama, who is focused like a laser on creating jobs and moving our country forward.”
