The Democratic Party of Doña Ana County mourns the passing of Stephen DuBois, a lifelong active member of the Democratic Party, community leader and organizer, volunteer, and veteran of World War II and the Korean War; and a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
He was an irrepressible spirit, and a friend to many of us. We are greatly saddened by his loss.
A resident of Tularosa, NM, and a former resident of Deming, NM, Stephen DuBois, who often described himself as a “Harry Truman Democrat,” was frequently seen by many of us criss-crossing New Mexico to support the efforts of local Democratic Party organizations, to staff volunteer tables, and to support the membership and community outreach efforts of Democrats throughout New Mexico for many years, along with his daughter Democratic Party of New Mexico CD 2 Vice Chair Stephanie DuBois.
He was a member of the DPNM State Central Committee, and a local active member of the Otero County Democrats.
DuBois was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on April 8, 1921 and joined the U.S. Navy on June 1, 1939. He deployed to Pearl Harbor where he served under fire during the devastating Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941. DuBois went on to serve at Wake Island and New Hebrides, where he helped build a secret airbase for the VMF Fighter Squadron 212.
DuBois later served in New Zealand, Guadalcanal and at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, New York, as well as the Haven HA-12 Hospital Ship. At the end of World War II, DuBois assisted with the evacuation of Prisoners of War from Nagasaki, Japan. DuBois also served during the Korean War in 1950 with a medical battalion and the 1st Marine Division Dog Med Company. DuBois retired from the Navy as a Hospitalman Chief, ranked E7, in 1959.
DuBois has volunteered his time, talents and expertise to the Health Clinic in Tularosa, the Planning and Zoning Committee for both Otero County and Tularosa and was instrumental in bringing the VA Clinic to the community. DuBois has served on the Red Brick School Foundation where he set up the organization’s constitution and bylaws, and is a lifelong member of the VFW and the Marine Corps League.
Stephen DuBois was ninety-five years old.
We express our condolences to his friends and family and to his loving daughter, Stephanie DuBois. Stephen DuBois was a great inspiration to all of us.
