Senator Heinrich to Senate Republicans: Do Your Job and Act on Supreme Court Vacancy

“The Constitution lays out very clearly here what our constitutional duty is. And to turn our backs on this the way that Leader McConnell has suggested … is certainly disrespectful of the Constitution.”

Today, at a press conference in front of the Supreme Court of the United States, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) urged Senate Republicans to do their job, stop ignoring the Constitution, and confirm a new Supreme Court justice.

Following the passing of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, the Senate Republican leadership has said they will refuse to hold hearings or vote on any nominee for the vacant seat.

“The Constitution lays out very clearly here what our constitutional duty is,” said Sen. Heinrich during the press conference. “And to turn our backs on this the way that Leader McConnell has suggested … is certainly disrespectful of the Constitution. If we don’t do our jobs, it makes it impossible for the Supreme Court to do their job.”
