The Democratic Party of Doña Ana County is proud to join in the observance Women’s Equality Day. Women’s Equality Day commemorates August 26th,1920 when votes to women officially became part of the U.S. Constitution, with the certification of the19th Amendment. This day marks a turning point in the history of the struggle for equal treatment of women and women’s rights.
Today honors the efforts of women in American throughout American history—across years and across cultures—to achieve full legal equality with men. We honor the historic and central role of women to the nation, to the state of New Mexico, and to our local communities. In celebrating Women’s Equality Day we also join in celebrating the diversity of leadership that we, as a nation, as a community organization, and as a political party must embrace, if we are to continue to ensure the future success of this great nation and remain a beacon of freedom to the rest of the world.
In 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day.” The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.
