The Affordable Care Act in New Mexico: Results

This morning the White House released a report entitled “This is the Affordable Care Act in New Mexico – Repeal would Raise Costs, Strip Protections from New Mexico Families.” The report outlines the ACA benefits that New Mexicans are already enjoying.

These are some of the highlights:

  • 862,000 New Mexicans –including 122,000 children – with pre-existing conditions no longer have to worry about being denied health coverage or charged higher premiums because of their health status
  • 373,000 New Mexicans with private insurance and 147,700 people with Medicare have gotten at least one free preventive health care service
  • 555,000 New Mexicans will no longer have to worry about annual limits.

In addition, young adults now can stay on their parents plan until they’re 26 years of age, and seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare no longer have to worry about paying out of pocket for their medication once they reach the threshold and before they hit catastrophic coverage.

DPNM Chairman Sam Bregman commented: “Looking at these numbers the GOP’s claim that Obamacare isn’t working seems laughable. The numbers speak for themselves, while the ACA is benefitting people in New Mexico, Republicans like Rep. Steve Pearce continue fighting to sabotage and gut Obamacare without any consideration for the millions of Americans who are already seeing the benefits of this law.

It’s clear that the GOP is playing politics and trying to confuse the American public with their rhetoric.”
