Aug. 21, 2013 will be remembered as an historic day in the history of human rights in New Mexico. On that day the landscape shifted for LGBT people and their allies in our county and our state.
On that day, Doña Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins opened the doors of his office to all committed, loving couples in New Mexico and began issuing marriage licenses. He did it despite opposition from the Governor’s Office and others opposed to equality for all. But he said he was tired of waiting for the courts, and his careful reading of the N.M. Constitution and statutes compelled him to move forward.
Now a group of Republican legislators have filed suit to turn back the clock, block our county clerk from issuing marriage licenses, and invalidate the marriages of the couples issued licenses in our county.
Mr. Ellins stood for you on Aug. 21. He needs our help now. Will you stand with him today with your donation? We who support his leadership appreciate your strong consideration and your generous financial support. Any contribution of $5 or more will go a long way to supporting our courageous county clerk, and the cause of equality for all New Mexicans.
