Judge Barbara J. Vigil, the Democratic candidate for Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court and Judge M. Monica Zamora the Democratic candidate for New Mexico Court of Appeals brought their statewide judicial campaigns to Dona Ana County on Saturday where they participated in the Whole Enchilada Fiesta and Parade, met with southern New Mexico voters, and held a meet and greet event at the Doña Ana County Democratic Party Campaign Headquarters in Las Cruces.

Barbara J. Vigil is the Chief Judge of the First Judicial District Court in New Mexico. The First Judicial District encompasses the counties of Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties in northern New Mexico. Judge Vigil is respected across the state of New Mexico as being a fair, dedicated and experienced Judge. Judge Vigil is running for the position of New Mexico Supreme Court Justice, to fill the position of retiring Justice Patricio M. Serna.

Judge Vigil has served as District Court Judge for over 12 years and has presided over thousands of cases in the areas of complex civil litigation, family and domestic relations matters, child abuse and neglect cases, juvenile delinquency cases, criminal proceedings and appeals of administrative decisions.

While serving as District Court Judge, Judge Vigil also served 10 years as a Children’s Court Judge. Judge Vigil was instrumental in the creation of Juvenile Justice Boards in Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties. These boards served as a vehicle for the receipt of state and federal funds for many social programs serving at-risk youth.

Judge Monica Zamora, the Democratic nominee for New Mexico Court of Appeals is also running her first statewide contest. Zamora, who has deep family roots in New Mexico, has established an extensive  record of standing up for children and families in the interest of justice for all.

Born and raised in Santa Fe and educated at the University of New Mexico School of Law, Judge Zamora has continued her family’s tradition of legal service to the community. Prior to her appointment to the District Court bench in 2005, Judge Zamora practiced law for over 18 years handling a large variety of civil cases representing both plaintiffs and defendants alike.

Zamora has assisted over 500 families in adopting children. As District Court Judge of the Children’s Court Division in Bernalillo County, Judge Zamora has presided over juvenile justice, abuse and neglect cases – an area of expertise that would be unique to the Court of Appeals.
