The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce has awarded State Senator Mary Kay Papen one of its 2011-2012 Legislative Awards. The awards were presented in Albuquerque at the end of last month.
The awards are presented annually to community leaders in recognition of their efforts in helping the Chamber achieve its stated mission of making New Mexico a place where businesses can grow and prosper, where people want to raise their families and where tourists want to visit. State Senator Mary Kay Papen, who represents Doña Ana County, was recognized with the “E for Effort Award” which is an original cartoon from The Albuquerque Journal’s John Trevor. Papen was given the award for her sponsorship of the Space Flight Informed Consent Act, adopted by the New Mexico State Legislature, which protects New Mexico taxpayers and the spaceport authority from liability in the case of injury to those engaging in space flight activities.
“The ‘E for Effort Award’ is our way of thanking legislators for the effort and courage it takes to keep at it until that good bill gets up to the Governor for a signature”, said Terri Cole, President and CEO of the Chamber.
State Senator Mary Kay Papen, a Democrat, has served District 38 since being elected in 2000, after a successful career as a local businesswoman. As an elected representative from southern New Mexico, Papen has been a leading advocate in the state legislature for mental and behavioral health parity and for programs to end domestic violence.
