Private sector payrolls increased by 227,000 jobs in February. It marked the first time since early 2011 that payrolls have grown by more than 200,000 for three months in a row, indicating a broadening recovery. The economy has added private sector jobs for 24 straight months, or nearly four million payroll jobs over that period.
Today’s employment report provides further evidence that the economy is continuing to heal from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. It is critical that we continue the economic policies that are helping us to dig our way out of the deep hole that was caused by the recession that began at the end of 2007. Most importantly, we need take the additional steps to promote jobs and economic development that President Obama has proposed to create an economy built to last.
